Taking Your Teardrop Offroad for the First Time

Taking Your Teardrop Offroad for the First Time
Thinking about taking your teardrop trailer off road for the first time? As with all camping trips, a little planning and preparation ahead of time will help you avoid common pitfalls and enjoy your time in the backcountry.

Plan Your Route

Some of us like to jump in without too much planning, but knowing where you’re headed will make sure you don’t end up stuck. Research the terrain, check weather conditions, and look for campsites ahead of time. Nothing will ruin a camping trip faster than having to pack up your camp because you’re not allowed to camp there.

You can also look for designated off-road trails, and plan for permits ahead of time, another step that will avoid future headaches. If you have the option you can also head out with someone who has been to the area before.

Pack Appropriately

Once you’ve planned your route, it’s time to pack appropriately. Bring along all the essentials, including water, food, fuel, and medical supplies. Make sure to pack for the terrain – if you’re heading into the mountains, bring warm gear, and if you’re headed to the desert, bring plenty of sunscreen and extra water. It can take a little practice to decide what you need and what is just extra weight, so when you get back keep track of the items you didn’t need. Maybe those are ones you can cut on the next trip (excluding emergency gear of course).

Prepare Your Teardrop

Before heading off-road, make sure your teardrop trailer is prepared for the journey. Check your tires, brakes, and suspension to ensure they’re in good working order and have been maintained between trips.

Also make sure your packed gear and interior items are secured. Everything in your teardrop camper trailer will be moving around quite a bit as you head off the paved roads in and into the bush.

Take it Slow

Your vehicle and teardrop trailer might be able to handle the terrain, but driving too fast in an offroad setting is the quickest way to damage your trailer or possibly even tip it over. Taking a little extra time getting there will ensure that you get there in one piece and trust us–it’s better to go slow than to spend an hour winching a trailer upright.

If you haven’t done it before, taking your teardrop trailer off road for the first time can seem a little intimidating before you head out. Hopefully these tips will help your first offroad trailer trip go off without a hitch. Remember to plan your route, pack appropriately, prepare your teardrop and drive safely.
